Press Release: Delegate Irene Shin Makes History as First Korean American Woman Elected to the Virginia House of Delegates; Receives Committee Assignments
RICHMOND, Va. – Delegate Irene Shin of Virginia’s 86th House District made history today as she was sworn in as the first female Korean American member in the 402 years of Virginia’s State House. “I could not be more excited to begin my service to the 86th district. I was elected on a platform of effective, progressive representation for our district and Virginia, and I cannot wait to get to work.” Delegate Shin continued, “Additionally, as a proud first-generation Korean American, I recognize the significance of my swearing in and its reflection of the growing diversity of Virginia and the strength that diversity brings to all of us in the Commonwealth. The promise of America is reflected in the hopes and dreams of its children no matter where they come from and as my parents watched me being sworn in today, I took a long moment to reflect on their journey as immigrants and how it has shaped my life and career and inspired me to run for office to make life better for the residents of our community and the entire Commonwealth.”
Additionally, Delegate Shin was assigned to the Counties, Cities and Towns as well as the Communications, Technologies and Innovation. “I am truly excited about the committees I have been chosen to serve on. The Counties, Cities and Towns Committee will allow me to be a powerful and effective voice for the Town of Herndon and Fairfax and Loudoun Counties as we seek ways to empower our local officials to best represent and serve our communities.” Shin said. “And as the 86th district sits in the heart of the data capital of the world, I greatly look forward to my work on the Communications, Technology and Innovation Committee to further the synergy of state government with the vibrant and creative tech companies who make their home in Northern Virginia and employ thousands of my constituents with good-paying jobs. Between these committees, I am looking forward to serving our district with a community-centered approach that addresses our most pressing concerns and issues.”
