August Newsletter
Dear friend –
Happy August! As we get into this home stretch of summer, I want to start this month’s newsletter with three important things to know:
Virginia Sales Tax Holiday is back! Starting today and going through Sunday, stock up on back-to-school supplies and emergency preparedness needs tax free. For a list of eligible items, see here.
A drought watch has been issued for the Northern Virginia region. Please take voluntary measures to conserve water and use water wisely as part of your daily routines! For tips on how to conserve water, click here.
The application for the 2025 House Page Program is open! This is an amazing opportunity for young people to develop leadership skills and immerse themselves in the legislative process. More information is available here. Please reach out to my team at delishin@house.virginia.gov if you are thinking about applying or just want to learn more!
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
The 2024 session is now truly behind us – the votes have been cast, the bills that passed have been signed (or vetoed), legislation has gone into law. For a comprehensive review of new laws now in effect, you can check out the Division of Legislative Services’ annual publication, In Due Course.
As we start to look ahead to the 2025 General Assembly session, I have some ideas brewing already, but I want to hear from you. What’s on your mind? What challenge are you seeing within our community that you think could be fixed with legislation? What bill would you like to see signed into law? Never hesitate to email my office with all your bill ideas.
In fact, back by popular demand, I hope you’ll sign up to participate in my annual Build Your Own Bill workshop! We will have two sessions: Monday, September 16 and Monday, October 21. In the first session, we will work through how an idea becomes a bill. Then, in the second session, we will work through how a bill draft might eventually become law. Sign up here!
OUT AND ABOUT
July was a busy month for me, celebrating bills coming into law, seeing impactful community organizations in action, and uplifting some notable Virginians!
July was National Parks Month so I was excited to visit and enjoy many of the wonderful parks across the 8th district!
My sweet Mookie and I celebrated National Pet Day on July 11th.
It was such a thrill to celebrate with SEIU 32BJ as they won a historic vote on behalf of their members, securing paid sick leave benefits for thousands of workers at National and Dulles airports.
In honor of the Olympics underway in Paris, I just had to get a picture with the Herndon Torch!
July 21 was National Ice Cream Day! I was excited to visit several ice cream shops across the 8th district to celebrate.
I am incredibly grateful to President Biden for his lifelong commitment to serving the American people. I am also grateful for the opportunity that we now have to elect Kamala Harris to be our next President. I am thrilled to support this eminently qualified woman (and my former boss!) and commit to doing everything I can to support her campaign.
During the 2024 General Assembly Session, I introduced a resolution commending Joshua Grainer for his achievement of becoming the first Virginian to earn the title “Grand Master of Wine”. My team and I, along with representatives from the offices of the resolution’s co-patrons, were excited to visit RdV Vineyards in Delaplane to present the resolution.
